News of my breakup with Fu Yanjun spread like wildfire.
He had appeared in financial interviews before, so quite a few people recognized him. As for Su Yan, she was already a popular internet celebrity with a decent following.
Not long after, she posted a cryptic status:
“Some people are truly unbearable. I hope they disappear from my life for good.”
The internet immediately smelled drama.
Su Yan didn’t explain herself, but she just happened to “accidentally” like a comment insulting me.
And that was all it took for the internet to explode.
“Wait… isn’t there some girl named Tang who came between them?”
“They broke up and she’s still clinging to him? She must’ve made a fortune off him by now.”
“Poor Su Yan. She’s been innocent and naive after living abroad for so long. How could she possibly compete with someone who crawled out of some dark corner?”
I nearly choked to death on my water.
What the hell?
We’d already broken up, and she was still dragging me out to take the blame?
At this rate, if she got bitten by a mosquito, she’d probably blame me for that too!
Then things got even more ridiculous.
Someone claiming to be my coworker came forward, saying they had seen me coming out of the maternity ward.
Someone else even started spreading this rumor:
“Fu Yanjun’s true love is Su Yan. But someone used a pregnancy to force him into marriage, so he had no choice but to stay with her.”
I was so furious I nearly activated my keyboard-warrior mode.
Pregnant?
Where did that even come from?!
Were these people planning to have the baby for me?!
I was just about to dive into the comments and fight three hundred rounds when I suddenly realized…
The tide had turned.
Some mysterious force was quietly hiring online commenters to defend me.
“Su Yan is the most beautiful woman on Earth!”
“I heard you get paid one cent every time you praise Su Yan. Hahaha!”
“Don’t these posts feel a little too deliberate? Is she trying to manufacture public opinion for an upcoming show?”
The two sides started going at each other.
But at least no one was attacking me anymore.
After lurking in the comments for a while, I discovered that someone had actually spent one million yuan hiring people to defend me.
Me: “???”
What kind of billionaire was this?!
I secretly sent them a message.
“Thanks, stranger. Do you have some kind of grudge against Su Yan?”
Their profile picture was a tiny star.
Their username was: “The One Who Never Gets Chosen.”
Thirty seconds later, they replied:
“No. I’m just heartbroken lately. Figured I might as well spend some money.”
I stared at the message, completely speechless.
So this was what heartbreak looked like when you were rich.
You got dumped and casually threw away a million yuan.
Even being heartbroken was apparently a more luxurious experience for the wealthy.
I sincerely tried to comfort him.
“Your ex just didn’t know what she had.”
The reply came almost instantly.
“Don’t insult her.”
Me: “…”
…
I did everything I could to avoid Fu Yanjun.
But somehow, wherever I went, I kept “accidentally” running into him.
I’d see him at the coffee shop.
I’d see him in the elevator.
I’d even run into him downstairs when I went to buy milk tea from the company.
I was starting to wonder if the heavens had decided to force this ship down everyone’s throats.
On a public holiday, I was having afternoon tea with my best friend when she propped her chin in her hand and gave me a knowing smile.
“Why do I keep getting the feeling that Fu Yanjun likes you?”
I answered calmly, “Your instincts are wrong.”
“Then why is his phone still using a picture of you as the wallpaper?”
I refused to budge.
“He probably hasn’t gotten around to changing it.”
She raised another point.
“Then what about the other day? The elevator was packed, and he instinctively reached for your hand.”
“When did he ever try to hold my hand? I didn’t see anything!”
My best friend grinned like a professional matchmaker.
“Why are you getting so defensive? Or maybe you’ve noticed that he treats you differently from everyone else?”
I fell silent.
For one brief second—just one—I almost let myself believe it.
But I quickly came back to my senses.
If he really liked me…
Then when Su Yan returned to the country, he wouldn’t have immediately asked to break up with me.
Honestly, the more I watched Su Yan, the less she seemed interested in rekindling her old relationship with Fu Yanjun.
It felt more like she was deliberately stirring up drama to boost her popularity.
Sure enough, after repeatedly posting cryptic statuses and keeping everyone guessing, she successfully attracted a ton of attention and even landed herself a spot on a reality show.
Before filming began, I had no idea when Xu Qingqing had become so close to her.
The woman even enthusiastically brought Su Yan along to our company’s celebration dinner.
During the party, one of my coworkers happily raised his glass and bragged, “I got a sixty-thousand-yuan bonus for this project!”
Everyone immediately applauded and congratulated him.
Su Yan, however, merely smiled faintly.
“Mm… That’s enough to buy one pair of pants, I guess.”
The entire table went silent for three full seconds.
The poor guy’s smile turned painfully awkward, the corner of his mouth twitching as he hurriedly changed the subject and suggested playing a game.
No longer the center of attention, Su Yan started talking about the past instead.
She told us how she and Fu Yanjun had grown up together.
How she’d been bullied at school.
How the Fu family had always protected her.
Everything she said sounded suspiciously like she wanted me to hear it.
But strangely enough, I wasn’t annoyed in the slightest.
I simply lowered my head and quietly sent Fu Yanjun a message.
“Wishing you and Su Yan a lifetime of happiness. May you have a son soon.”
Less than ten seconds after I hit send, he replied.
“Tang Wan Yin. You’re seriously cruel.”
Before I could figure out what had gotten into him, the atmosphere at the table suddenly changed.
Su Yan’s phone rang.
The caller ID was impossible to miss.
“My Dear Jun.”
Everyone at the table immediately perked up.
Under the curious gazes of the entire group, Su Yan deliberately turned on speakerphone.
Her voice became so sweet it made my skin crawl.
“Jun-ge, what’s wrong? Why are you calling me?”
There was silence on the other end for two seconds.
Then Fu Yanjun’s cold voice came through the speaker.
“Say whatever you want to say. But don’t drag her into this. Otherwise…”
His voice turned even colder.
“I won’t let it slide.”
The entire table:
“…”
The drama had just taken a sharper turn than a roller coaster.
