“Come here and give me another kiss.”
I turned my face away. My entire body ached like I’d been run over by a truck, then had it reverse over me for good measure. At his words, I immediately snapped.
“When you said just one kiss, you ended up doing the whole damn thing. No more kissing. I’m tired.”
He Shiyan laughed—that shameless, infuriating laugh that made me want to call the cops.
“Come on, sweetheart. You don’t have to lift a finger this time. Just lie back and enjoy yourself. Let me take care of you.”
I spread my arms, my face blank.
“I feel disgusting and sticky. Carry me to the shower first.”
Before I could finish, he scooped me up. I settled comfortably into his arms, too lazy to move an inch. But the moment we stepped into the bathroom, before he could even turn on the shower, my back was pressed against the cold ceramic tiles.
…
Only after he had completely drained the last of my energy did he finally let me go. He dried my hair and carried me back to bed. I was drifting toward sleep when his phone rang.
A woman’s soft, hesitant voice came through the speaker.
“Shiyan… I’m back.”
My drowsiness vanished instantly.
He Shiyan turned his head toward me. I immediately shut my eyes and played dead. He slipped on his robe and stepped out onto the balcony.
The call lasted five minutes.
When he came back to change, I snatched up his phone in a flash. Caught red-handed, I blinked innocently and asked as casually as I could.
“Wen Wanting is back?”
His first love. His one and only white moonlight.
He Shiyan took his phone back.
“Yeah. There’s a welcome-back party.”
I sat straight up and hurled a pillow at his face.
“A welcome-back party at midnight? And you’re the only one invited? Wow. How special.”
“Jealous?” He caught the pillow effortlessly, one eyebrow arched.
“No. What are we, anyway? We’re not even dating. What right do I have to be jealous?”
We were civilized adults. The kind of arrangement that could be settled peacefully with a single check.
As he tied his necktie, He Shiyan pinched my waist.
“Still have enough energy to throw a tantrum? Looks like I haven’t been trying hard enough.”
That bastard.
Watching him get dressed in a perfectly tailored suit to meet his “old flame” only made me angrier.
“I want to go, too.”
His gaze lingered on my face for a few seconds.
“Fine. Go get dressed.”
On the way to the bar, I heard every single word of his friends’ whispers.
“He Shiyan makes all the decisions around here. It’s only a matter of time before he gets engaged to Wen Wanting.”
“That girl hanging around him now doesn’t even have a title. She’ll get dumped sooner or later.”
“How could a kept woman ever compare to a properly raised heiress?”
When we entered the private room, Wen Wanting was seated in the center of attention. She was elegant and ethereally beautiful. The moment she saw He Shiyan, her eyes lit up.
“A-Nian?”
The person sitting beside her immediately got the hint and vacated his seat.
Right then, I peeked out from behind He Shiyan’s shoulder and flashed the friendliest smile I could manage.
“Hi, everyone! Is there room for me?”
The entire room fell silent.
Wen Wanting maintained her graceful smile.
“A-Nian, who is she?”
I smiled and answered for him.
“I’m his little sister, An Yi. I heard you were back in town, so I thought I’d come celebrate. Besides, watching the movie live is always more entertaining than watching the trailer.”
He Shiyan said nothing. He simply sat down beside her.
In that moment, I understood everything.
I found an empty seat and sat down.
Wen Wanting placed a glass of wine in front of me, her smile flawless.
“Thank you for keeping A-Nian company while I was away. At least he didn’t have to be lonely.”
“Don’t mention it. Honestly, I wasn’t the one doing the hard work.” I smiled back.
A few people immediately caught the meaning and snickered.
Her expression changed. She switched to another glass.
“Let me offer you a toast in advance. A-Nian and I are getting engaged in two weeks.”
I froze.
Two weeks? That soon?
I looked at He Shiyan. He gave a slight nod.
That one nod was enough to make my heart go cold.
So it was true.
I drew a deep breath and raised my glass.
“Then congratulations to you both.”
Just as I was about to drink, a hand suddenly snatched the glass away.
He Shiyan tipped his head back and drained it, his voice cold.
“Did you forget you’re allergic to alcohol?”
Without another word, he ignored Wen Wanting as she stumbled toward him, apparently intending to lean against his shoulder, and walked straight out.
I hurried after him, but after two steps, the more I thought about it, the angrier I became. I spun around and grabbed the bottle of wine from the table.
Whoosh—
I splashed it directly over the people who had been badmouthing me.
Seeing them drenched, I immediately felt better.
“An Yi! Are you insane?!”
“I’ve been insane for years. You’re only noticing now?”
Someone ground their teeth.
“Wen Wanting is back. How long do you think you can keep living so comfortably?”
I gave a cold laugh.
“I don’t know. But at least right now, there’s still nothing you can do to me.”
Whether I got dumped tomorrow was tomorrow’s problem.
Today, I was angry, and I needed to let it out. I wasn’t about to be the one who suffered for it.
