Chapter 3.

My parents’ expressions right then were far more complicated than a final exam report card.
My mom yanked me into her bedroom and slammed the door with a loud thud.
I dutifully spilled everything: how my original blind date already had someone else in his heart, how Li Huaijing stepped in to take his place, and finally… how he happened to be in the market for a business marriage, too.
My mom stood frozen for a few good seconds before muttering under her breath, “The Li family… needs a commercial marriage? And on top of that… they chose our family?”
I didn’t have the luxury to analyze the logic. The single most important task right now was finding the family registry booklet as fast as humanly possible. What if Li Huaijing changed his mind and bolted?
I even squeezed in a quick outfit change, not just to look pretty, but to color-coordinate with the groom. After all, we were taking marriage registration photos; the bride’s visual game could not lose!
After touched up my makeup to absolute perfection, I scooped up all the documents, grabbed Li Huaijing by the hand, and sprinted out the door.
He drove us straight to the civil affairs bureau.
Sitting in the passenger seat, I leaned over and whispered, “Where are your documents?”
He casually gestured toward the back seat.
I glanced back to see a neatly organized, completely filled folder. Only one thought crossed my mind: This man… is terrifyingly efficient at everything he does.
Right before we signed the papers, he looked me dead in the eye with absolute seriousness. “I will only ever have one wife. And I will never get a divorce.”
The entire registry hall turned to stare at us. The clerk looked at me as if to say, Girl, you must have saved the entire galaxy in a past life.
As for me? I had only one resolve burning in my heart: I’m going to make this man fall head over heels for me.
Everything happened so fast my brain barely had time to load.
Engaged. Married. Paperwork finalized. I felt like I was living inside a dream.
When Xiaoxiao heard the news, her only takeaway was: “You literally get whatever you want, but this is… a little extreme.”
Shortly after the wedding, Li Huainian went abroad. I immediately nudged Xiaoxiao, “Fly after him! What are you waiting for?!”
True to her impulsive nature, she booked a flight that very same day.
On our wedding night… I honestly thought he’d sleep in a separate room.
He didn’t.
Midnight was creeping up, and he showed zero intention of leaving. He finished his shower and sat on the edge of the bed.
Me? I stalled for time in the bathroom.
When I finally stepped out, he was already waiting. Seeing how awkwardly I hovered, he stood up, scooped me into his arms, and carried me to the bed.
Leaning down, his voice carried a rare, soft tenderness: “Niannian… can I?”
I knew full well what “can I” meant. I nodded.
What I didn’t expect was that he was completely inexperienced, too. As cold and composed as the ruthless CEO appeared on the outside, he was just as fumbling and clumsy in that moment.
Though I had to admit, once he got into the rhythm, he was a remarkably fast learner.
Seeing me wince in pain, he paused, his voice dropping into a low husk, “Wife… I’ll be gentle.”
That single word, wife, made the tears spill straight out of my eyes.
He leaned down, kissing my tears away and soothing me with gentle whispers.
Yet the very next morning, he flipped right back to his default factory settings: cold, distant, and completely unreadable.
As time went on and our “intimate sessions” grew more frequent, his skills upgraded exponentially. He loved my body. I could feel it.
And me? …It wasn’t like I was unsatisfied, either.
The real problem was that I had never, not even for a second, managed to step into his heart.
I snapped out of my daydream and pinched my own arm hard. I’m supposed to be furious! Why am I reminiscing about this right now?! Unbelievable!
Not long after, Li Huaijing showed up at my doorstep carrying our son, with Jiang Nian trailing right behind him.
I gave a strict order: “Don’t open the door.”
Two hours passed, total silence outside. The kid had started throwing a fit, wanting to go home.
My phone buzzed. A text from him:
“Su Niannian, don’t even dream about a divorce.”
“I’m giving you two days to cool off.”
“Then we talk.”
“I’m taking our son back home first.”
…And that was it.
Xiaoxiao read the screen and let out a long sigh. “Why is he refusing to sign the papers? Or… does he actually have something going on with Jiang Nian?”
I let out a cold, humorless laugh. “Is that even a question? They’re glued at the hip!”
“Do you have actual proof?” Xiaoxiao asked point-blank. “Like, caught-them-red-handed proof?”
I shook my head. “No.”
“Then why are you pushing for a divorce so hard?”
I stopped talking, unlocked my phone, and handed it to her. “See for yourself.”
Jiang Nian’s social media posts:
  1. “Working overtime every day with the person I love… pure bliss.”
→ Photo: A man’s hand wearing a Patek Philippe watch.
→ The exact watch I bought for Li Huaijing.
  2. “He got me coffee and still remembered my exact order.”
→ Photo: Coffee cup next to a pair of silver-framed glasses.
→ Glasses I also bought for him.
  3. “On a business trip with him, and he took me out sight-seeing.”
→ Photo: The silhouette of a man’s back.
→ That back… I could recognize it anywhere. His entire outfit was styled by me from head to toe.
There were countless other posts, all seamlessly pieced together to paint a crystal-clear narrative: We’re in love. The only thing missing was the male lead’s face.
Xiaoxiao practically blew a fuse on the spot. “Divorce! You need to divorce him right this second!”
On top of that, I had recently found out that the anonymous sponsor who funded Jiang Nian’s art studies abroad years ago… was Li Huaijing.
Three months ago, she returned and became his special assistant. Since then, they had been virtually inseparable. What stung even more was that every thoughtful gift he ever gave me showed up on her feed first.
His work schedule became increasingly packed, but one thing never changed: his appetite in bed. Every single day…
I had even caught myself wondering: Is it because Jiang Nian isn’t satisfying him, so he comes to me as a backup?
Gradually, I lost any desire to cooperate. I pretended to sleep. I dodged him. I fought back.
…But every single time, he always managed to sweet-talk me into giving in. I really had zero backbone.
My mind drifted back to the night of his birthday.
He came home extremely late. I was so furious that I threw the birthday cake and his gift straight into the trash.
The moment he stepped through the door, he wrapped his arms around me. I shoved him away and stated plainly, “I want a divorce.”
He asked why.
I replied, “I don’t love you anymore.”
He flew into a rage, slammed the door, and walked out.
I thought he was gone for good. But when I walked back into the living room, I found him sitting by the kitchen island, eating the cake I had just thrown out.
All by himself. Silent. Eating every single bite until the plate was clean.
I stood there watching him, a bizarre mix of emotions swirling in my chest.
When he finished, he stood up, picked me up in his arms, and said, “Time for a shower.”
I protested: “No.”
Then he used his face and his body to do the persuading.
And predictably, I lost.
Ah, the curse of letting a pretty face cloud my judgment.
Looking back at that night, I really should have stood my ground… but sadly, I was no match for him.
