Chapter 5

The full weight of the situation finally crashed down on Su Hang. He felt like his entire world had collapsed around him.
The precious daughter he and Wen Jiu had spent eighteen years shielding from the world… had just been swept off her feet and carted away like that?
He was profoundly, thoroughly miserable.
It felt as though he had won the lottery, only to be hit square in the face with a bucket of ice water right at the moment of celebration. His heart was utterly frozen.
The sudden shift in his demeanor was so drastic that Wen Jiu couldn’t help but sigh in exasperation. “Will you please stop acting like the sky is falling? Nobody said she was swept off her feet! I asked you to focus on the point, not construct elaborate tragedies in your head.”
Who even knew what wild, dramatic scenarios were playing in his brain right now? He looked as though he were mourning a national catastrophe.
Su Hang blinked, looking lost. “Then what are you saying?”
Wen Jiu shot him a look of utter disgust. “…We are driving to Jing City tomorrow morning to check on Feng Bai. The boy was in a serious car accident—you expect us not to pay our respects?”
Su Hang cleared his throat, calming down slightly. “Right. Yes. That’s only proper.”
He paused, a flicker of recollection crossing his mind.
“Wait…” Su Hang’s eyes widened in realization. “Is Feng Bai that bright young man who used to tutor Miao Miao? Excellent grades, quiet kid… didn’t his family go through a major tragedy a while back?”
He rattled off a barrage of questions, clearly terrified that Wen Jiu had forgotten who the boy was.
Wen Jiu stared at him as if he were a complete idiot, her expression screaming: Are you genuinely this slow?
Su Hang’s voice trailed off into a subdued murmur. “…So you remember him?”
Without a word, Wen Jiu turned on her heel and walked into the bathroom, shutting the door behind her. She refused to waste another breath on him.
A young man as exceptionally striking and brilliant as Feng Bai was hard to forget after a single meeting.
Only Su Hang possessed a brain that operated on a ten-minute delay.
She shook her head helplessly in the mirror. Getting worked up over Su Hang was a fool’s errand; if she took him seriously, he’d drive her to an early grave.
Then her thoughts drifted back to Su Ran, and a cold, uneasy feeling settled in the pit of her stomach…
Meanwhile, at Jing City General Hospital.
Uncle Wang had already retired to a nearby hotel for the night.
Su Miao intended to stay in the hospital room, putting everything else on hold for now.
“It’s getting late,” she said gently, seeing that Feng Bai had no intention of settling down. “You should get some sleep. I’m not going anywhere—I’ll be right here with you.”
Feng Bai looked up at her, his dark eyes soft. “What about you?”
“Hmm?” Su Miao blinked, catching his drift a second later. She offered him a warm, reassuring smile. “I’ll be staying by your side.”
Feng Bai paused.
She had always been this soft-hearted. So soft-hearted that all he had to do was put on a helpless, pathetic front, and she would immediately stay by his side without hesitation.
His foolish girl.
She was truly irresistible.
Feng Bai lowered his eyes, keeping his thoughts to himself. After a moment, he shifted his body all the way to one side of the narrow hospital bed, patting the vacant mattress beside him. “Sleep here with me.”
Su Miao froze, her mind instantly short-circuiting. She stared at him like a deer in headlights, unable to process the words that had just left his mouth.
Realizing she had vastly misinterpreted his invitation, Feng Bai offered a strictly formal, serious explanation: “The bed is reasonably wide. It can easily accommodate two people…”
Because his tone was so completely earnest and devoid of impropriety, Su Miao felt a sudden, burning urge to slap herself.
What on earth was I just imagining?!
When did my mind get so dirty?!
He was simply looking out for her comfort, yet her thoughts had wandered straight into the gutter…
It was utterly humiliating.
“O-oh… right,” Su Miao squeaked out, her cheeks instantly burning hot.
To spare her any further embarrassment, Feng Bai quietly turned onto his side, facing the wall and presenting his back to her.
Su Miao let out a long breath of relief, staring at his broad back. He really is the most considerate person in the world!
Switching off the overhead light, she carefully climbed onto the edge of the mattress, curling up into a neat little ball beside him.
“Did you really only sleep for twenty minutes?”
Su Miao felt as though she had been asleep for hours, lost in an unusually long, winding dream.
“Yes. So stop overthinking things and go back to sleep,” Feng Bai murmured. He took the blanket from her hands, draped it properly over her shoulders, and settled back down beside her.
It all felt so terrifyingly natural.
Su Miao chastised herself internally. Ever since her rebirth, her mind had a habit of running completely out of control.
Case in point: Feng Bai was currently lying beside her in the most noble, gentlemanly manner imaginable, yet her brain was busy entertaining completely inappropriate scenarios…
Ugh, this is bad. Very, very bad, she chided herself silently before nestling deeper into the mattress.
Twenty minutes later.
Su Miao entered a state of profound existential agony. Had she really only been asleep for twenty minutes earlier? Why was it that twenty minutes had passed since she woke up, yet she couldn’t catch a single wink of sleep?
In fact, she was becoming more awake by the second. Her eyes were wide open in the dark, bursting with energy.
Noticing her restless fidgeting, Feng Bai felt a wave of helpless affection.
She was likely still rattled by whatever nightmare she had experienced.
“Can’t sleep?” he asked quietly.
Su Miao: “……Mmh.”
She didn’t know why either, she just couldn’t drift off. The only thought in her head right now was that tonight was excruciatingly long.
Feng Bai thought it over for a brief moment before extending a long arm, gently pulling her into a loose embrace.
Startled by the sudden movement, Su Miao gasped softly. “You…”
His expression remained completely serene in the dim light. “Since you can’t sleep, you’re probably still shaken up. Holding you like this might help you feel safer so you can fall asleep faster.”
Su Miao gave a solemn nod against his chest. “That… actually makes a lot of sense.”
Not only did it make sense, but she was technically getting a free hug out of the deal.
She carefully shuffled a fraction of an inch closer into his chest. Since they were already hugging, getting a tiny bit closer shouldn’t hurt, right?
Although she wasn’t entirely sure when Feng Bai had developed feelings for her, one thing was certain: he definitely didn’t dislike her.
Which meant she didn’t need to rush her confession.
Once he recovered, was discharged, and returned to An City, she would organize a grand, unforgettable grand confession for him.
Su Miao felt her spirits lift instantly. Surrounded by his familiar, clean scent, his embrace truly felt like the safest place in the entire world.
“Feng Bai,” she whispered softly into the dark. “Goodnight.”
“Goodnight,” he murmured back, his composure flawless from start to finish.
This time, Su Miao drifted off almost immediately. No nightmares haunted her sleep, and she slept peacefully straight through until morning…
Su Miao woke up early.
She opened her eyes and was just about to stretch when an overwhelming sense of wrongness hit her.
Oh.
Memory flooded back, Feng Bai had held her in his arms all night.
Su Miao felt her entire body go rigid. She tried to move slightly, only to realize her current position was utterly scandalous.
Whether due to her notoriously chaotic sleeping habits or sheer sub-conscious instinct, she was currently wrapped around him like a clingy octopus.
Su Miao held her breath, painstakingly disentangling her arms and legs with the surgical precision of someone defusing a bomb… She stole a cautious glance at Feng Bai. His eyes were still tightly closed, his breathing even.
She let out a massive sigh of relief. If she moved fast enough, she could pretend none of this had ever happened before he woke up.
Thirty seconds later.
Su Miao slipped out of bed, her feet hitting the cold floor as she wiped a bead of nervous sweat from her forehead.
Thank goodness he was still asleep.
If Feng Bai had woken up to find her clinging to him like a helpless koala, the awkwardness would have killed them both.
Little did Su Miao know, the second she stepped into the bathroom, the young man on the bed slowly opened his dark, clear eyes. There was not a trace of sleepiness in them.
He had been wide awake for a very long time.
Su Miao quickly washed her face.
Shortly after, Uncle Wang arrived at the hospital room carrying a warm spread of breakfast containers.
Su Miao felt a sudden pang of guilt. “Uncle Wang, I’m so sorry to keep dragging you around like this…”
“Nonsense, Miss Su, this is my job,” Uncle Wang waved a hand with a warm, grandfatherly smile. “Did you sleep well at the hospital last night? I can take the night shift tonight so you can head back to the hotel for a proper rest.”
Su Miao instinctively ducked her head, the tips of her ears burning a bright, telltale crimson.
Last night… she had actually slept exceptionally well…
Uncle Wang naturally missed her blushing reaction, assuming her quiet nod meant agreement.
Meanwhile, at the Su residence in An City.
Wen Jiu was practically bouncing on her heels, nagging her husband mercilessly. “Can you move any faster?! It takes hours to drive to Jing City!”
Su Hang sighed, fastening his watch. “Yes, dear, I know. But I had urgent documents to handle last night.”
Wen Jiu: “……” When your own daughter gets abducted, you can handle your paperwork later!
She genuinely could not fathom how Su Hang’s brain functioned. Half the time he overreacted to the point of absurdity, and the other half he reacted with the speed of a dying snail, acting as if nothing was wrong.
Either way, he was utterly, hopelessly dense! — A commentary brought to you by Wen Jiu.
“I am giving you a look,” Wen Jiu said coldly, shooting him a glare sharp enough to cut glass. “Interpret it yourself.”
